If there is something that is a must have in an Australian home, it is a good size deck, one you can stretch out on, have a BBQ with friends even when it rains, spread out the big comfortable chairs and read a book or just watch the sunset with a well deserved G&T.
THE DECK!!!!
Boral http://www.boral.com.au/timber/timber.asp hardwood 'Forest Red' timber is being used, I choose this colour so that it blends with the deep red/brown of the internal timber floor and I will give it a coat of stain once all is finished and to have some fun, I will be using a 2 part resin to fill any timber knot holes but again that will be a bit later and I will up date the post.
One of the first things I decided to do was to paint the bearers with good old 'Mission Brown' timber fence paint. This is so when you glance down & view between the timber deck timbers you don't see the pale colour of the bearer but a dark stain; also it may just give the bearer a little extra life.
With that idea in mind I also used a couple of spray cans of brown to spray over the bright & shinny ant caps so you don't see them through the gaps in the decking.
Scott planned out the individual pieces and created a spacer from a cut piece of timber so that all the strips would all sit together as best as possible. This is the rear deck.
The end of the timber is neatly cut once nailed in place and you can see above the start of the timber balustrade.
Now to start on the front Deck.
How lovely are these corner joins, a picture in itself.
To create the balustrade, Scott connects the posts to the bottom and top rail first, painstakingly marking off the space between each post with a wood block made to measure.
Then standing and fixing them into place, the finished look is so super cute and ready to sand and paint that is after filling all the nail holes and a good bit of no more gaps at the bottom of the posts to keep the timber good & safe for years to come.
Above is the rear deck and I asked for a good size space to place the back steps.
I also decided to have the balustrade only return the corner so that the carport is more usable as an entertaining area and easy access to the kitchen door from the car especially if you have a boot load of shopping.
As you can see there is still lots of work to do and I am so terribly behind in my posts, things are moving at a rapid pace now though very exciting.
The tiling is booked to start and the kitchen will go in not long after, can't wait!!!
