I spent last week, the 9th to the 13th January on site working along side with Nathan & Joel (Happy Birthday) and I have to say they achieved so much more than I did but that's ok I enjoyed myself.
There is so much that can happen in just one week when the sun is shining ;-)
Now I have lot's of photo's for you of a number of sections of the Cottage in it's building stages and I hope they will be in the right order. The first photo is of the front of the home and the favourite bedroom 1 with the Bay window, you will see Nathan has installed all the windows around the house and they will all have lovely wide timber trims once finished.
Let's start with the blue metal roof battens, these are secured across the timber roof trusses and the Colourbond roof sheets will be fixed directly to them at regular intervals on the high rise of the curve of the roof sheet, this is so water will run off and you will see this in a photo to come.
Nathan very at ease on the roof but for an owner builder, you may want to secure yourself a little more, these guys are so used to walking around on beams
Above you can see how the blue metal battens are spaced and below how they are fixed.
You can just make out the blue metal battens running from front to back across the timber trusses.
This shot of the back of the Cottage gives you a mush better idea of the lovely wide Verandah and you can see where the 2 set's of double French doors will be placed. The timber sheeting that has been nailed around the home is for bracing and the Weather Tex Cladding will be placed over top.
Gutters & Fascia on the South side - This is a very interesting system and it makes attaching the Fascia quite simple, have a look.
Here you can see the blue metal batten that has been attached to the extended end of the roof truss. The metal profile which the Fascia is attached to is nailed onto the timber end, nicely squared off and you can see where Nathan has placed a pink string line to make sure that all profiles will be in the exact line, no wonky Fascias here. (Mixed in the photo back ground is the nieghbours eaves if you are having trouble making out the image).
All the metal profiles are in a row attached to the ends of the timber trusses.
The first section of Fascia has been put in place by sliding it along from the rear end of the house & set in place. The next section was clipped on.
Isn't this smart, just clips into place, easy!
Looking to the South side from my lovely neighbours yard. Nathan has now attached the gutter in this photo and you can see a little silver box section, this is where one of the down pipes will be placed.
Some of the locals coming in for a look!
No, don't chew the timber please, these Cockatoos have such strong beaks, they can destroy most things if they are in the mood.
.
It looks at though the gutter was put in place after the roof Sisalation was installed.
Wall and roof Insulation called Sisalation - this is a must for thermal protection, it is blue to the outside and silver to the inside. This comes in rolls and you simply nail it in place to the outer side of the walls then the Weather Tex cladding is placed over top. On the roof, you roll it out over the blue metal battens & then the roof sheeting is placed over.
This first photo shows the Sisalation to the wall and the windows in place. This section of North wall has already had the external cladding installed as you can see from the above picture.
Bedroom 1, looking to the front Bay windows, lovely.
Joel has rolled out the ceiling Sisalation, measured & then cut to the correct length and put in place. Note; the wall and ceiling Sisalation are different so you must use to right one for each location.
Covering up the roof was such a good feeling that we are now getting some where.
Ya!!!
It's SOOO cute!!
Now has anyone seen a carport like this one?
As you can see in the first photo on this post, Nathan has placed chunky strips of timber to the joins on the front bay as there are no profiles that work with these odd angles he has come up with a perfect solution and I think it looks great, a very solid and strong visual finish. Again, Nathan just does not cut corners.
Roof Sheeting - Ya, Ya & Ya!!! This is what we have all been waiting for, clear skies to just get the roof going on & here it is, the South side. Nathan clicked this photo from his i-phone, I'm too woosey to get up on the roof.
Howeve,r I did take the below photo's from the neighbours upstairs window while having a refreshing cup of tea (& cake).
Not everyone can be so excited about a roof but I sure am and you can see just how straight all the fixings are.
You may not think this is a lot of work for 4 and a half days but it is time consuming & fiddly work trying not to get splashes on the roof, hate that. Yes it would have been so much easies to paint all this prior to the roof going on but the weather just did not give me that chance.
There you go, doesn't that look so much better than raw timber and when the 2 sets of 10 Lite double French doors are in place, it will look super smart ;-)
Today is now the 17th Jan and Nathan has just sent through the two below photo's of the North side of the Cottage. You can see that they have fixed the Fascias, Gutters, Sisalation, Down pipe ready boxes and started the roof sheeting. All this they have achieved in just 2 days!
I have decided to Gurni the outside Weather Tex cladding to clean off any dirt & dust from the building works so that I have a super clean finish to paint, hope it doesn't take me as long to do as the Verandahs ;-(
From the bottom of the cladding to the ground will be covered in so that the under house area stays warm & dry with of course a few air vents.
I don't think I will be on site for another week so I hope Nathan keeps me posted with lot's of photo's as he has done, things are now moving along and don't want to miss a thing.
Also I would like to create a post of all the Fixtures & Fitting that I have for the fit out of this lovely Cottage, you will love them including a super 900 wide free standing gas cooker, Christmas feast here we come!
This has been a long post so I hope you have enjoyed it and it has been helpful to you with your building works or wishes to build.............do it!!! (it's painful but it can only make you stronger)
